The January transfer window has arrived, there was 3 positions I wanted to strengthen:
Left Fullback
Attacking Central Midfielder
Striker
I wanted youth, quality youngsters who’s stats will improve. I raided Barcelona and signed 2 genuine stars and the highly talented Tottenham fullback.

LB Gareth BALE £2.4m

ACM Giovani DOS SANTOS £2.5m

ST BOJAN £1.3m
I was delighted to get all three, the first step in building my own team of Galácticos. I went into the edit strip number and was surprised that the CPU gave GIOVANI (4) and BOJAN (7) the numbers I was assigning them.
The number 7 jersey, is a magical number at Celtic worn by the two greatest ever Celtic players voted by the fans, Jimmy “Jinky” JOHNSTONE and Henrik “the king of kings” LARSSON. BOJAN would be a worthy player to fill this jersey. That’s the joy with computer games, you can escape reality and enter your own little world. Managing your favourite club in football games allows you to do this, expressing your own football philosophies.
Which brings me to an EA fault, the transfer market in Manager Mode is unrealistic. I should never have got these players, and especially the princely sum of £6.2m in total. I am in my first season in this MM, the first transfer window and I am signing STARS, it appears far too easy to obtain players. I am not complaining too much, but it should be harder, maybe they will correct this in FIFA 2009.
I will update the stats as the seasons in my Manager Mode progresses.
Yep, you’ve discovered a major flaw in Manager Mode - as long as you’ve got the money, you can get any player you want, regardless of who you are or where you are in your league.
It could only have been a deliberate decision by EA, because I played a few seasons in FIFA07 last year and the transfer market in that Manager Mode was hyper-realistic. Playing as Coventry I had no money and even when I saved up some money I couldn’t get any players because the club was low-status. You had to progress and win things before you could buy great players - just like in PES.
Now, this year, it’s the complete opposite! Like you, I trust this will be looked at for FIFA09.
In the meantime the only thing you could do is operate some House Rules, and only sign players that you know would sign for your club in reality.
p.s. I didn’t operate any House Rules and just signed whoever I wanted in my first MM career. I figured I was still learning the new FIFA and it was justified for me to have a team of uber-galacticos at Coventry within a couple of seasons. I plan to return and restart as Coventry on Legendary difficulty (!) pretty soon, and will be operating some strict transfer House Rules then. That means no Cristiano Ronaldo in 2010, which is when I got him last time…
G’day Greg
Yes, I have discovered the transfer flaw in MM along with many other things. I’ve got a post scheduled for Tuesday, detailing many things I have discovered in MM.
I started a MM the other night with Forest, and it’s brought a touch of realism to the game. The budget, players stats and staff upgrades are low.
I have sim’d a lot of games. Trying out things, I have sussed out a few things I wouldn’t have otherwise. Interesting.
Staff Upgrades > FITNESS COACH, you must have a minimum Level 7, for players to recover after matches. Due to low budget, this takes weeks to achieve. squad rotation comes into play.
TEAM CHEMISTRY, my favourite subject in MM
I signed a few players as free agents with better stats, none are household names to me. I put majority of them in team with a team chemistry of 52. Few games later, players were fatigued, put in my reserves Team Chemistry rose to 65. I tinkered with starting 11 with reserves and new sigings, got a Team Chemistry at 64. One player makes a difference, CB MORGAN who raises team chemistry +8 points. He plays every week and made him captain.
Transfer rules, in my MM with Celtic the three players I have signed, only 1 is playing from the start, BALE. The other 2 I use as subs. I won’t be signing any BIG names. I will stick with squad and get their stats raised.
I am looking to fulfil YOUR CHALLENGE and maybe looking at starting with a side like Forest, maybe Southampton. Building the side up which will take time. Starting with Celtic, the stats are all in place.
Another thing, there have been no night matches in my midweek fixtures.
