The start of my 2nd season in my FIFA 08 Manager Mode career, I lost the league title on goal difference having trailed the majority of season. I won the Scottish Cup, the only Cup competition in the Scottish calendar, as EA have strangely omitted the League Cup from the Scottish programme.
I played a full campaign with no night matches last season, these opening 6 fixtures were all played at night. I don’t know if anything has happened, was there a patch recently, I don’t know about? I must say that the night matches in FIFA 08 look great.
I had a Qualifying Round in the EFA (equivalent to the UEFA) Cup against Watford!! Eh? They were in the Coca Cola Championship last season. Surely another EA mistake in Manager Mode, I have noticed a few now in the 2 weeks I have been playing it.
I destroyed Watford over the two legs, coming out 4-0 aggregate winners. I won the away leg 1-0 with a Scott BROWN long ranger. The 2nd leg seen an easy 3-0 win. I qualify for the Group Stages.
I want to win all 3 trophies I enter this season, I have got to grips with the FIFA game-play, it has been a steep learning curve.
I drew my opening league fixture with Aberdeen 0-0. My rivals Rangers were up next, surprisingly an easy 2-0 win. Another comfortable 2-0 win against Dundee Utd, followed by a close 1-0 victory against Hibernian, who I have found are my toughest opponents in this MM career.
I have played 6 games and yet to concede a goal, I find FIFA easier to defend than PES. The players hold their shape better, I use the square button to double up on attackers on the flanks which has cut the amount of goals I was losing from this position. I tend to lay off the controls in central areas, and jockey my players into a position to nip the ball from opponents, it is working.
PENALTIES
I want to comment on penalties or in my case, no penalties. I have played about a hundred or so matches in a variety of modes, and not once have I received a penalty kick. I can get soft free kicks anywhere on the pitch, but inside opponents penalty box, that’s a different matter. I don’t know if it’s a fault in the game, but it is certainly an area where I never get the decision.
