European lesson

30 06 2008

I am 9 points clear at the top of the table heading into these group of fixtures.  I am playing on Professional difficulty with 6 minute halves.

League Fixtures

  • Rangers 0 CELTIC 3
I don’t know what’s happened with Rangers this season, they ran away with the League until the closing stages, where I pulled the gap back and was thwarted at end by goal difference.  They are doing really well in the ECC Cup (equivalent to the Champions League), they are top of their group (below).  I have played them twice now and to be honest, they have been my easiest games of the season.
  • Kilmarnock 0 CELTIC 1
  • St Mirren 0 CELTIC 1
  • CELTIC 2 Falkirk 0
  • CELTIC 1 Aberdeen 1
  • Hearts 0 CELTIC 1
I am now 13 points clear, the improvement in a short period of time is staggering, I really struggled with this game when I first played it.  Although, I really am starting to ask myself, is professional difficulty with Celtic the correct difficulty level? I have played 17 league matches and only conceded 2 goals, I am fairly new to FIFA, having switched from the disappointing PES 2008, only 6 weeks ago.  The next 2 games might answer my question.

EFA Cup

I went into the last 2 fixtures in the group stage top of the table on goal difference.

  • Standard Liège 3 CELTIC 0
My heaviest defeat in this FIFA 08 Manager Mode career, I was glad in a way, I was starting to think that professional difficulty was becoming too easy.  Having only conceded 1 goal domestically, this result shows that I am on the correct difficulty.
The one thing I noticed from the first whistle, was the Liège players seemed to be head and shoulders bigger than me.  Their front 2 were man mountains, and bullied my defence from pillar to post.  This is the first time I have came across these type of players in FIFA 08, I was impressed.
I must say the score-line was harsh in terms of Liège had 2 chances in the 2nd half and took them both. The possession was shared, their finishing was better than mine on the day.
  • CELTIC 1 R.C. Celta de Vigo 0
I have definitely noticed in the European games in the group stages that the teams hold on to the ball better, a touch of realism to the game.  I shudder to think what the calibre of teams in the Champions League will be like.
I imagine the real Celtic players notice a massive jump in quality from domestic football to the highs of Champions League nights.
I have qualified in 3rd place, with a record of W2 D1 L1, although I wasn’t sure whether the 3 teams would qualify as with the real UEFA Cup, but I did thankfully.
I play Sporting Lisbon in the 1st round of the knock-out stages, another jump in class.
